about

One day, a few years ago, I was driving while listening to some early recordings of my music. A thought struck me: that’s exactly how I feel. The awareness had snuck in, almost as an out-of-body experience. Another song came on, and I realized that at times I feel like that too. Then panic struck. Any listener to my music will know what it is like for me inside my head… the emotions, the discomfort, the uncertainties, the pleasures and peace.

This troubled me because I have worked as a psychotherapist for four decades. As a therapist, most of that time as a Registered Psychologist, I am required to only reveal my feelings in the context of a professional relationship if it will bring benefit to my client. I am cautioned, well... cautioned to be cautious about it. Some feelings you just keep to yourself.

Then comes this music and it broadcasts out every sort of feeling that I have inside, open for everyone to hear.

I mentioned this to a colleague. Her comment was something to this effect: that is what music is supposed to do, that is why we listen to music---so we can understand that our own internal feelings are shared by others.

So I guess it is okay that you listen to this, even though it is me. I hope it will touch something inside of you and you will know that someone else in the world feels that way too.
